Helping Animals Everyday

Volunteers are a huge asset to the charity and we simply could not carry on the work we do without the help from local people. We are very grateful to each and every person that would like to be involved in the charity and welcomes everybody.

Volunteering Rules

You need to be over 18 years and registered with us before you can start (under 18’s are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult) registration can be done online but may take a couple of weeks to process.

Volunteers can help any day of the week between 10am and 3pm with the animals. Any other volunteer work can be done 9am to 4pm any day.

Please note we sometimes have waiting lists for people to work with the animals, as it is very popular.

Volunteer With Us

Dog Walking

Sometimes with over 45 dogs all in need of a good walk and play in our paddocks the staff are always happy to see helpers with dog walking. It’s fantastic to get our dogs out of the kennels having fun and socialising with new people as much of possible.

Cat Cuddling

Cats love attention and love our team of volunteer cat cuddles. If you love cats and think you could give some of our cats an hour of cuddles they will appreciate it.

Home Checker

We home hundreds of animals each year and each owner needs a home check before they can take their new friend home. We need volunteers to help us make sure these homes are perfect for our animals to move into.

Gardening

We have a large site to take care of so anyone who enjoys gardening is welcome to help us keep the place looking its best. If you would like to join our popular gardening group their meeting updates can be seen on our website.

Charity Shop Helpers

The charity shop in Lancaster is always in need of people to help sort and keep the shop looking its best at all times. The shop is open 6 days a week 9am-4pm even just a few hours a week would be appreciated.

Fundraising

Fundraising is the charity’s main source of income and we work very hard to do as many events as we can to both raise funds and awareness for the charity. We need people to run information stalls, collection buckets at local supermarkets, and lots more. Or if you would like to hold your own event for Animal Care please chat to us about how we can help.

Van Driver

We often pick up goods for our charity shops from kind supporters who donate the van runs are sorted by Debbie and Richard but they can always use a helping hand. We also pick up and transport dogs to other rescues and need help with driving sometimes long distances.

Foster Carer

Anyone interested in foster care is welcome to chat to the managers. We need foster homes for older dogs, young pups, pregnant cats, young kittens. We already have a strong team of foster homes who are wonderful but we can always use more help especially between April to September. Knowledge and experience is required.

Tea Room Helpers

The tea rooms is a busy friendly place to volunteer, we need people who are able to help the team cook, bake and serve everyday between 10am-3pm if you can only help once a week it really will make a difference.

Site Maintenance

With a very busy working site we always have things that need fixing.

    Role: Cat Cuddler

    Overall purpose of the role:

The overall purpose of the role is to support the staff in providing the best possible care to our cats whilst they await their forever home. By spending time with our cats, you will not only provide them with the love and attention they deserve but you will play a vital role in developing their socialisation, which can aid successful rehoming.

    What you’ll be doing:

    • Spending time with our cats, helping them to get used to people and enhancing their socialisation

    • Stroking, grooming and playing with the cats, providing them with the attention they need

    • Following the guidance that is provided for each cat; much of this is written

    • Providing valuable feedback to staff about the cats’ behaviour and progress, where appropriate

    • Seeking clarification from staff where you are unsure and asking for help when needed

    • Following animal care’s health and safety guidelines and reporting any incidents or concerns to staff

    What you’ll need:

    • Experience of cats and a genuine interest in their welfare

    • Confidence and ability to safely handle the cats, many of whom will be nervous and sensitive

    • Ability to manage the physical requirements of the role

    • Ability to comprehend and follow the instructions provided by the staff, many of which will be written

    • Confidence and willingness to approach staff with any questions, clarifications or concerns

    • Basic IT skills will be required to operate animal care’s information system

    • A patient, calm and understanding nature is essential when dealing with our animals

    • A positive and friendly attitude is important when dealing with our staff and fellow volunteers

    • You must be able to carry out the role with minimal supervision

    Application process

Our application process couldn’t be simpler:

    • Find the role you are interested in

    • Complete the application form online

    • Successful applicants will be invited to attend a group recruitment and information session, or interview, where prospective volunteers can learn more about the role and the volunteering team can learn more about the applicants.

    • Applicants who are successful at interview or group recruitment will then attend an induction session.

    General notes:

Volunteering roles are subject to group recruitment/interview, a satisfactory reference and completion of induction.

A reference must be provided with the application. This could be from a current or ex employer, a teacher/ lecturer, a person of good standing in the community or a longstanding friend who can attest to your good character and suitability to the role. Unfortunately, it cannot be from a family member.

Applications without a reference will not be taken forward

We have lots of people who want to volunteer with us, so we ask that you think carefully about whether you have the necessary skills and attributes, as set out in the role description, and whether you have the time to commit.

Unfortunately, we are unable to accept volunteers who are under the age of 18 due to our insurance policy. We are, however, able to accommodate some children with adult supervision though the busyness of the site and the number of applications we receive means that we do have to limit these. It is therefore not unusual to find that we have a waiting list for these spaces. As a small and busy team, we are unfortunately unable to support individuals who require supervision or care. We do however keep some spaces for individuals to attend with a carer, though the number of applicants we get for these spaces also often results in a waiting list.

Finally, working with our animals is by far our most popular roles. As well as managing the number of applications we receive, we need to allow new volunteers the time to conduct inductions and the staff the time to help them to settle in. There will therefore be times when we have to operate a waiting list and during very busy periods we may have to place a halt on applications.

    Your Health

It is important for you to tell us about any health conditions or additional support needs you may have so we can support you appropriately in your role. (Please be aware that due to the physical nature of some of our roles and the accessibility of some of our site we may find it difficult to accommodate individual needs).
Do you have any health conditions or support needs that may affect your volunteering or that our staff should be aware of? If yes, please list the details below:
